This is an interesting late war example of the standard issue Luftwaffe enlisted man’s side cap. The size 57 cap is constructed of a late war coarse or recycled wool, with no knap on the reverse side. Also, the height of the turn down sides is reduced compared to earlier models. Inside is lined with the typical blue/purple artificial silk. As typical, the insignia are hand sewn. What is interesting is that there is a small hole in the right rear of the exterior, another at the front corner of the top crease and another just under the eagle beak. Two of these have been repaired with the exact same thread as was used in the balance of the cap construction. This suggests that the repairs were made at the factory and that the holes were either due to the use of remnants or the wool had pre-existing holes from the poor manufacturing quality of the base fabric. Otherwise, this cap is in unissued condition
